In an uber-competitive Los Angeles nightlife scene, there’s always one certainty: if it’s owned by Sam Nazarian, there will be celebrities there. After taking a three year “break” to focus on Katsuya and the SLS Hotel (plus countless other SBE ventures), Nazarian has returned to the always-lucrative Hollywood nightclub universe, and, in pure Nazarian fashion, he’s done it in a conspicuous way.
Taking over the former Foxtail space, the brand new MI6 is not meant to evoke the real British Secret Intelligence Service per se, but instead the over-the-top luxury of the James Bond movies. When James Bond is the model, you know the place is going to be lavish and that it’s going to boast an endless supply of inexplicably beautiful women. And no, it doesn’t disappoint.
MI6 may be located on a relatively low-key corner of Santa Monica Boulevard (remember we’re talking in relative terms here), but it’s brought out the red carpet, celeb-sighting, velvet rope mentality of LA’s most buzzworthy clubs. You can generally expect to see some familiar faces enjoying the three-stories of VIP luxury. Nazarian has enlisted MomentFactory (who did the visuals for last year’s Nine Inch Nails tour) to produce aural/visual multimedia environments that keep the club bumping while high-rollers sip from expensive bottle service.
Nightlife synonymous with cumbersome velvet ropes and impromptu visits from the cast of The Hills, MI6 aims to take local nightlife revelers beyond the typical pap-lounge to create a hip-hop den with more than just designer interiors. The first floor is a gentlemanly space of dark leather club chairs, ebonized wood and sprawling banquettes offering a small menu of evolved bar snacks that could eventually debut as a stand-alone restaurant. But upstairs is where you really want to be, tucked-inside an intimate dance and lounge space accessed through a separate entrance not necessarily guaranteed by entrance into the downstairs dining room.
