Just in case the gilded chandeliers, mahogany wood paneling, mahogany-framed mirrors, a massive emerald stained-glass mural that runs along the marble bar and swooping velvet drapes didn’t give it away, the Silent Era of the 1920s was the inspiration behind Bar Delux, the whisky-centric watering hole from nightlife vet Adolfo Suaya (Geisha House). A massive emerald stained-glass Art Deco mural above the marble bar evokes Old Hollywood at its most glamorous, as does the lipstick-red ladies’ lounge upstairs.
Bar Delux is a glimmering slice of heaven with striking chandeliers and a massive emerald stained-glass mural that features a large blimp, airplanes, buildings and rows of smokestacks. But what the ladies might be talking about at the Kristofer Keith-designed lounge (he previously designed Goa) is the glamorous, red womb-like bathroom upstairs, which looks straight out of the 1920s. In addition to the guys’ and girls’ single stalls downstairs, a large lounge on the second floor provides couches, mirrors and extra restrooms for whatever it is that women do when they go to the bathroom in large groups.
Bar Delux is a hit thanks to seasoned veterans (Adolfo Suaya & Kristofer Keith) and the Foundry chef Eric Greenspan. The lounge is heavy on the Art Deco, a style known for its mysterious ability to turn men into gentlemen and women into starlets. Delux’s impressive centerpiece is a massive, emerald green, stained-glass mural. Zeppelins and Atlas Shrugged-esque bodies hover over an “Any City, USA” skyline which hovers over the incredibly long, marble-topped bar (sans bar stools).
This bi-level bar, tucked behind a glass façade, is the latest fun-house addition to the Cahuenga Corridor. From the street, passersbys can spy a glimpse of the reservations perch, but not a peep of the debauchery beyond the black-velvet curtains.
The capacity of Bar Delux is tiny and once you get past the door, the emerald green and mahogany hideaway welcomes you with privacy (table heavy and low lit), and intimacy (roaring fireplace). There are 14 bottle service tables, most of which are sold out every night the venue is open.
